He is deciding how to present characters formed off of Vladek's memory.
I feel Art is having trouble presenting Anja and her parents in this scene. He Shows Vladek standing there in the corner telling this scene and I feel he does this because he wants the reader to know Vladek is his only source he has for scenes such as this. He doesn't know how to depict his grandparents he has never meet before, so how to you present history that is intangable that only your father can tell you a story of. With Vladek's attitude who knows how acurate his acounts are for situations such as this. So Art only has this one source and its maybe fairly acurate at best. I mean there is no where in the book showing his father-in law's worry for Anja, Art only depicted his father-in law worrying about himself and his wife. This is why I feel this is a problem because why would Art leave this out? I mean surely his father-in law was not so self centered to not worry or mention anything about his own daughter getting out. He can't exactly present history with one shaky source and that is impossible to present or portray perfectly or even all of it. I mean I feel he may have left out a big part of this scene.
