M&Ms

This advertisement is about M&Ms and what they are used for. What I noticed first was the song, “I will do anything for love.” I feel that because the M&M is a man, it is saying that every man should do anything for love, but that is just my opinion. This put me in a stupor because not every guy will do anything for love. The M&M portrays a man who is ultimate, who will literally do anything for his woman. It showed how the M&M would carry the woman’s shopping bags, watch movies with her and her friends, go to a beach to watch the sunset, be romantic and paint her nails in the tub with several candles, let her give him a make over, help her bake, and even play the piano. I feel that the producers of this advertisement were trying to subconsciously tell men what they should do to be a great man for their woman.

I was also slightly offended from this advertisement because it is mainly directed at women. The commercial is using rhetoric, persuading women to eat chocolate and that they will be able to do all these fun things when they eat chocolate, and ideology with its subliminal messages. It also uses anti-hegemony for women; it portrays them as being dependent upon a man, and lacking leadership/power. It made me feel that M&Ms, or chocolate in general, were made for women only, which is an extremely cliché thing to advertise. This is where the ideology comes into play; it is unconsciously known that this advertisement is for women because of the fact that there are no men in this advertisement. There are only women and the one M&M. This is eliciting a stereotype on us women that we are in love with chocolate. This advertisement made it seem that women only go shopping and spend tons of money so that their man must help carry some of their bags, are too weak to carry our own bags, always bake sweets, are infatuated with romance such as the sunset and the candles in the tub, and that we love to do make overs. I feel that this is true for a small percent of the female population. However, the majority of the female population is made up of strong independent women! Not women who always need romance or help carrying their bags. Yeah, I am sure that most women would find it nice to find a man who would do all of those things for us, but we don’t always need that; we like our independence. This advertisement is stereotypical, and portrays women as being dependent upon a man, chocolate obsessed, excessive shoppers, infatuated with the idea of romance, and miraculous bakers.
